In the online world, businesses are struggling to be anything but a needle in a haystack and as a result are left fighting a long and arduous battle for results that could take months to appear. However for those with the budget and desire for a speedier and effective path to success then PPC is the answer.

PPC stands for pay per click and refers to a specific system of advertising whereby companies pay for every click that has been received on the created advert. In search engines PPC advertisements are the listings that appear in the yellow boxes above and on the side of organic search results.

Although alone not an ideal long term option, for successful online marketing PPC when hand in hand with SEO; can work wonders in establishing a truly visible online presence.

In our PPC guide we hope to break down the complexities of a PPC campaign and show that when done right it can help achieve phenomenal results.  We have so far provided a basic introduction and highlighted the key steps to be taken into account when considering PPC advertising and if you have decided that this is the route your online marketing should take then the next step is preparation.

The first and most obvious step of preparing a PPC campaign is keyword building. With some solid research surrounding your business, industry and its popular search terms you should be able to establish a keyword list of thousands…the more variations and variety; the more chance you have of exposure. Naturally the larger your keyword list, the more your spend, so ensuring to use tools such as Google's keyword suggestion you will be able to narrow your focus to the right, detailed terms.

Once you have selected your keywords, the next step would be to ensure you have a solid understanding of click costs. Using a range of tools available you can understand the positions your different budgets may allow you to reach and estimate what you need to do in order to achieve maximum results…it is such preparation that will ensure your campaign goes a long way.

Naturally throughout your PPC campaign you will be fighting competitors; so before actually going forward take time to see what your competition is doing. No, we don't mean anything dodgy but by taking a gander before you begin and regularly there after you can see what search terms your competitors are using and ensure you are fighting the right battle; there are even tools available to help you do this.

A word of warning though, don't try and be clever! Naturally your instinct will be to pick keywords that have the highest traffic numbers whether they are relevant or not but Google won't allow it, not even in the slightest. Never forget that Google has gotten to where it is by being unbelievably smart…try to fool it and you won't get far.

Preparation is key to ensuring success when it comes to PPC…don't go in blind, control your campaign, maintain awareness and reap the benefits.
